GOOD NEWS FOR CANADIAN SPOUSES WAITING FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCY

The federal government under the leadership of Justin Trudeau has launched a new program that will see spouses of Canadian Citizens who are currently in Canada receive an open work permit pending the processing of their spousal sponsorship application.
Many families in Canada have suffered unbearable hardship as a result of the delay in processing their spousal application under the family class, many do not have health coverage, it was also impossible for some to work in Canada due to lack of work permit. Should we begin to shout eureka? not so soon say Kenny Thompson of Thompson Immigration Consultants Inc. While acknowledging that this is a laudable step in the right direction, Kenny cautions that the taste of the pudding is in the eating.
There have been too many promises in the, particularly with pilot programs akin to the one being discussed that have not resulted in the quick processing time and fast tracking trumpeted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada now known as
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRC) (IRCC). Kenny advises that IRCC Minister should not look back once he has put his hands to the plow. IRCC must do all in its power to ensure that this new pilot project does not go in the way of the Grand Parents Sponsorship pilot project which is yet to admit one person since it launch three years ago, despite calls for 5000 applications every January 1st.

This is not to say that those who are looking to sponsor their spouses should not apply. On the contrary Kenny opines that it is better to err on the side of sending in application for spousal sponsorship right away, after all this is a new government, with a new promise that applicants whose application is in process, will see their open work permit applications processed within a matter of weeks while new applicants could see their permit applications processed within four months.
